The Gromov Institute's airfield is one of the largest in the world. Its concrete surfacing covers the area of 2.5 million square kilometers. The airfield has two runways (VPP-1 and VPP-4, the latter being 5,403 meters long), runways for vertical takeoff and reduced run aircraft with elevating engines, a park for planes and helicopters, and steering strips.

The flight control is exercised from the three command centers, that were built as the airfield increased in size, and its equipment got more sophisticated. The airfield is equipped with the whole complex of radio aids and illumination lights which ensures its operation at any time of day and night at almost any weather conditions, provides the landing minimum meeting the requirements of the ICAO's first category (60 x 800 m), and allows testing onboard approach systems for the second and third category landing. During the continuance of its existence, the Right Research Institute's success in research, testing and development of aircraft machinery has been inseparably associated with the powerful production facilities, insuring design and manufacturing of flying laboratories, stands and test-beds, and unique flying models.
