In the 60s,the first domestic system of this kind was
created,the Unified System of Automatic Air-Traffic Control,Navigation
and Landing for Military and Civil Aircraft (The Polyot system).Using
the flying labs based on IL-18 and An-24 planes, the issues of automated
aeronavigation were developed for the main flight stages :from climb
to landing approach at 40 to 60 meters of altitude.Later, these results
allowed to solve the same problems for Il-62,Il-76, and Tu-144 aircraft.

It resulted in devising new configurations of actuator
mechanisms, development of the systems with improved stability and controllability,
automatic landing mode including touchdown, and methods of landing minimum
determination. A number of autopilots and automatic flight control systems
were also developed. A close attention was paid to full-scale investigation
of special purpose systems: airborne radars, sensory and communication
systems, counteraction systems, and components of weapon control systems.
More than a score of flying labs were equipped and used for the investigation
and solution of the most relevant issues concerning creation of these
systems. << Back
