Advanced flying lab-based development of the systems of aircraft still under construction allows considerably reducing the number of the prototype's test flights.

“The unique flying laboratories with variable stability and controllability parameters, based on the Tu-154 and Su-27 planes are used to develop the control algorithms and components of prototype aircraft and different versions of data display systems.”

The Institute has a large park of flying labs to perform advanced development of almost every system of prototype aircraft. The unique flying laboratories with variable stability and controllability parameters, based on the Tu-154 and Su-27 planes are used to develop the control algorithms and components of prototype aircraft and different versions of data display systems. With these flying labs, it is possible to simulate the dynamics of any prototype aircraft and train its crew for the first mission.
Comprehensive advanced and maintenance research of newly constructed engines, engine systems, and auxiliary engine units is performed using multipurpose flying labs based on the production aircraft II-76, An-12, etc.

“The unique technique of determining stall characteristics was developed, including deep stall of heavyweight transport aircraft at Mach numbers equal to the actual ones and large Reynolds numbers, involving large-scale models.”

Flight tests and research of prototype and production systems of satellite and long-range navigation, inertial instruments, as well as development of new techniques and methods for flight-testing flight control and navigation equipment, are conducted aboard the II-76MD multipurpose flying laboratory.
For concept development of a unified system of communication, navigation and observation in accordance with the ICAO's construct, the multipurpose An-72-based flying lab is used. The An-26K and Tu-134UBL flying laboratories are used to flight-test new airborne weapon systems. The An-12BK multipurpose flying laboratory equipped with the experimental movable cockpit in the fuselage stern allows testing emergency escape means - ejection systems and parachutes.
Aboard the MiG-25U flying lab, research and tests of dynamics and high-altitude stabilization of the K-36 ejection seat family are carried out. Since 1978 the Institute has been conducting advanced flight research into critical flight behaviors with the aid of dynamically similar free-flight models. The unique technique of determining stall characteristics was developed, including deep stall of heavyweight transport aircraft at Mach numbers equal to the actual ones and large Reynolds numbers, involving large-scale models. This technique helped to dramatically reduce complexity and cost of model research maintaining at the same time high reliability of the obtained data.
